In the early years of my hunting career, long before the advent of stainless rifles I continually fought the problem of rust. For many years, I lived and worked along the coast of Alaska where it rains often and heavy, along with the adverse effects of salt water. I used to spend nearly 330 days a year in the field with my Model 70 pre 64 .375 H&H slung over my shoulder. I tried every form of rust preventative possible, with almost no positive results. When you come in at night after a hard day in the field, one does not feel inclined to clean a rifle. I still spend on the average about a month a year along the coast of Southeast Alaska.
In 1998, I evaluated several gun oils and greases. Only two of the tested products seemed to help prevent rust. My plan was to test individual oils and evaluate each as to its worth in preventing rust and corrosion for the readers of WILD SHEEP. None of the oils tested did much of anything in preventing rust. I did find very positive results in using gun grease. One that I used was the long available Hoppes Gun Grease which can be purchased at most sporting goods stores. Even when exposed to rain and salt spray and left overnight without cleaning, or a wipe-down, there was seldom any evidence of rusting.
Another product that worked successfully was RUSTY DUCK POLYMER ALL PURPOSE GREASE in a spray can. When sprayed on it comes out as a blueish greasy material that needs to be spread with a rag. It worked very effectively in preventing rust.
Time has passed and several companies sent products that they claimed would prevent rust. Here is the way I conducted my test. I used 12d nails that were throughly cleaned then labeled. Next each nail was coated with the product to be tested. Each was pushed into a block of styrofoam and left outdoors. I sprayed a saturated brine solution on the nails. My tests were severe and I got some surprises. I decided to repeat the test but without brine. Some products that made wild claims failed totally. The nails sprayed once with brine were tested for a month and the nails not coated with brine were tested for about three weeks. I got a very pleasant surprise when a friend gave me a small amount of an oil called Eezox. It was by far the best product tested.
